What is Kastrup Havn — and Sneglen?

Kastrup Havn is the harbour and marina on the eastern edge of Kastrup, opening onto Øresund with the runways of Copenhagen Airport on one side and the Swedish coast visible across the water. Alongside the bath sits Kastrup's marina, rows of sailboats behind the breakwater, and a long promenade that runs the length of the strandpark — good for a walk any time of year, not only when you are swimming.

The harbour's best-known landmark is Kastrup Søbad, nicknamed Sneglen ("the snail") for its spiral wooden walkway. A roughly 100-metre bridge leads out to a circular bathing platform that rises gradually over the sea and ends in a five-metre diving platform. The bath is free, open all year, and built from azobé — a hardwood tough enough to sit untreated in salt water. It is one of the small, well-designed things that make Kastrup worth living in, not just passing through on the way to a flight.

Why Indian takeaway is the right call after the harbour

We are open in the evening, not at lunch — Tuesday to Sunday, 16:00–20:30, closed Mondays — which happens to be exactly when most people finish a walk, a swim or a bike ride along the water and start thinking about dinner. In our kitchen we build every curry from a base of onion, ginger and garlic cooked down slowly, with whole spices bloomed in ghee before the tomato and cream go in. Nothing comes out of a bag, and we taste every batch before it goes out the door. That is also why our food travels well: a sauce that has actually been reduced properly does not separate or turn watery by the time you carry it home from the harbour.

We pack for the trip, too. Curries and rice go in separate sealed containers from the naan, so the bread stays soft instead of steaming itself limp on the way. The søbad does not close for winter, either. Cold-water swimmers use Sneglen through December and January as much as they do in July, and a five-metre diving platform in the middle of Øresund in February is not for the faint-hearted. If you are one of them, or you know one, a hot curry afterwards is not a luxury — it is basically medical advice. We run the same schedule right through the colder months, so a Tuesday evening dip and a Chicken Tikka Masala afterwards works exactly as well in January as it does in August.
