Paneer Curry in Kastrup: Shahi Paneer or Palak Party?

If you are looking for paneer curry in Kastrup, there are two on our menu at Inder'n: Shahi Paneer and Palak Party made with paneer. Both are vegetarian, both are built on soft paneer, and they taste nothing alike. Here is how we tell them apart when someone asks at the counter at Sirgræsvej 4.

What paneer is, and why it works in a curry

Paneer is a fresh Indian cheese made by curdling warm milk and pressing the curds. It does not melt, so the cubes stay whole in a hot sauce, and it soaks up the flavour around it. That is also why a good paneer curry in Kastrup is a question about sauce, not about cheese. Our two paneer dishes use completely different sauces.

Shahi Paneer: the mild, creamy paneer curry (129 kr)

Shahi means royal. The dish comes from the Mughal court kitchens of North India, where cooks used cashews, cream and whole spices to build sauces that were rich but gentle. In our kitchen we follow the same idea. We blend soaked cashews into a smooth paste, cook it into a slow-simmered tomato base, and start the sauce with whole spices such as green cardamom and cinnamon warmed in ghee.

The result is pale orange, silky and lightly sweet, with almost no heat. Our menu describes it as paneer in a creamy cashew and tomato sauce, and it is vegetarian. It costs 129 kr. It is the paneer dish we suggest for children, for anyone new to Indian food, and for a mixed group where not everyone likes spice.

Palak Party with paneer: the green paneer curry (139 kr)

Palak is the Hindi word for spinach. Palak Party is our creamy spinach sauce, and you choose the protein that goes in it. Choose paneer and you get the vegetarian version, which is the closest thing we have to the classic palak paneer from Punjab. It costs 139 kr.

Where Shahi Paneer is sweet and soft, Palak Party tastes green, savoury and earthy. The spinach gives it body, and the paneer gives it something to bite into. If you like dishes with depth and a little bitterness, like a good saag, this is the one. There is more detail in our Palak Party guide.

Which paneer curry should you order?

• Order Shahi Paneer if you want mild, creamy and slightly sweet. It is the safe choice for kids and first-timers, and it pairs well with garlic naan.
• Order Palak Party with paneer if you want a savoury, spinach-based sauce with more character. It goes well with plain basmati rice.
• Order both if there are two of you. The two sauces contrast, so every bite of naan tastes different.

Our recommendation: if it is your first time, start with Shahi Paneer. If you already know you like spinach, go straight to Palak Party.

How to order paneer curry for two

This is the order we would place ourselves for two people, with prices from our current menu:

• Shahi Paneer: 129 kr
• Palak Party with paneer: 139 kr
• 2 naan (plain or garlic): 2 x 17 kr = 34 kr
• 1 portion basmati rice: 25 kr

That comes to 327 kr, or about 164 kr per person. Rice is not included with the curries, so add it if you want it. If you want a cheaper third dish, Daal Makhani and Chana Masala are 109 kr each.
